Three major areas of Polish tableware in Boleslawiec

In Boleslawiec, there is an area where several Polish tableware stores are clustered together.

If you go to that area first, you can see several companies at once, so you can get around efficiently.

Each area will be briefly described.

(1) Boleslawiec Station North Area

© OpenStreetMap contributors

If you visit Boleslawiec, the area you must visit is north of the train station, the area shown in map 1) above.

The factories of Zakłady and Ceramica, long-established manufacturers of Polish tableware, are located here, as are the stores of most of the workshops.

It takes less than 10 minutes to walk from Boleslawiec station to Zakłady company.
From there, a further five-minute walk will take you to the directly managed stores of Ceramica and other workshops.

(2) Boleslawiec Station West Area

Walking west from Boleslawiec Station for less than 20 minutes, you will find an area where Polish tableware stores such as WIZA Inc. (Map #2 above)

WIZA stores are also located in area (1), but the store in the western area is larger and has a wider selection.
There are also famous select stores and small workshop stores if you have time.

(3) Boleslawiec suburban area

Other stores are scattered throughout the suburbs of Boleslawiec. (Most of them are located off the map.)

It is not possible to walk from the Boleslawiec train station, but rather rent a car or take a cab.

Manufakt’s factory, which offers factory tours (reservations required), is also located on the outskirts of the city. (The location is shown in the lower left frame of the map above.)

Things to know before you go to Boleslawiec: 1) There is almost no public transportation.

Before we introduce you to the Polish tableware stores in each area, here are three things you should know before visiting Boleslawiec.

The first is. That there is virtually no public transportation in Boleslawiec.

There are no streetcars or subways, only city buses, and they are fairly infrequent. It is like the countryside in Japan;

Therefore, it is not necessary to Transportation is mainly by foot or cab.

Because the workshop areas are scattered, the number of stores you can go to is quite limited if you walk to all of them. And the tableware is heavy.

If you are planning to visit a lot of stores, you may want to consider a tailor-made independent tour with a private car only in Boleslawiec.

Things to know before visiting Boleslawiec (2) Opening hours on Saturdays, Sundays, and holidays

The second thing to know before visiting Boleslawiec is the hours of operation on Saturdays, Sundays, and holidays.

Many stores close earlier on Saturdays than on weekdays, and many more are not open on Sundays and holidays.

Hence. When planning your visit to Boleslawiec, we recommend that you avoid weekends (especially Sundays and holidays) as much as possible!

All of the operating conditions of each store are summarized in the next section, but we will give a brief description of the overall trends.

Open on Saturdays

While most stores are open on Saturdays Note that hours of operation are often shorter than on weekdays!

Some stores close as early as 3:00 p.m., so it is important to plan in advance where to start your tour.

Open on Sundays

Only a few stores are open on Sundays and most are closed.

In Poland, there is a law that basically all stores are closed on Sundays except for Working Sunday (Shopping Sunday).

For this reason, many Polish tableware stores are also closed on all Sundays or open only on working Sundays.

Working Sundays remaining in 2019 are 9/29, 10/27, 11/24, 12/15, 12/22, 12/29.

In 2020, the number of working Sundays will be reduced even further, with only 7 working Sundays in the year…. (two weeks before Christmas, one week before Easter, and the last Sunday of January, April, June, and August)

By the way, restaurants and cafes are almost always open, even on Sundays.

national holiday

Holiday business seems to be quite fluid, depending on the store owner ^^;

Each store has its own policy, such as “Basically closed on national holidays” or “Sometimes open,” but you can’t tell if the shop is actually open or not until you go there ^^;

Therefore, when visiting Boleslawiec, it is best to avoid national holidays.

If the day you are visiting Boleslawiec is just a holiday, it is better to check with the restaurant in advance to see if it will be open.

By the way, most stores were open on holidays during the Boleslawiec Pottery Festival, as it is a once-a-year time to make money.

Other holidays, you probably shouldn’t expect too much.
I was lucky if it was open for business ^^;

Things to know before going to Boleslawiec (3) Check quality before purchase.

Some workshops rank their products according to the color of the seal. The photo shows Ceramica’s Quality 4 = Grade 4

The third thing to keep in mind when shopping in Boleslawiec is quality.

Because Polish tableware is completely made to order, most of the products sold at the factory-owned store in Boleslawiec are surplus or second-class items.

Each workshop ranks their products according to their own standards, and some of the lower-ranked items are chipped or cracked. Some of the lower-ranked items are chipped or cracked;

Always check for cracks or chips in an item before purchasing it, regardless of its rank.

You may visit Boleslawiec with great enthusiasm, thinking, “I’ll definitely buy that piece of Polish tableware in the home of Polish tableware! Even if you visit Boleslawiec with great enthusiasm, you may not find the design you are looking for, or you may not be able to get the same series…. It’s no wonder, since the products are completely made to order;

However, the selection is overwhelmingly better than what you can find in Japan or other cities in Poland, and the prices are definitely cheaper! You will definitely be excited by the many designs you have never seen before ^^.

A select store famous for its Harry Potter-esque appearance.

The store, which extends to the second floor, had many unusual items such as chairs and cake stands. There were few designs that I personally liked, but it would be good for those who like traditional patterns of Polish tableware.
